![]() The deeper we delve into Wendy’s psyche, the more addictive the plot becomes. Tarsitano’s setup is near perfect as we sit in on Wendy’s therapy sessions, meet Ben, her childhood teddy bear, and visit her father’s grave. From the beginning, we understand that Wendy has been terrorized in various ways since childhood. Living in New Mexico, Wendy is a second-generation dentist whose destiny is obviously on a collision course with Hawk and Jamie. ![]() That sets us up for the main course, when we’re introduced to Wendy Jag. The result is a complex protagonist we can all root for, raising the stakes for the terrors yet to come. Those expectations are quickly squashed as Tarsitano shifts back in time, depicting Hawk’s interactions with friends and family in a time of despair. The prologue, a grisly and well-crafted scene, signals that we could be in for a hopelessly dark story filled with torture porn. Readers will find out for themselves whether or not that’s the case here.Įarly on, author Davide Tarsitano shows us that he’s not interested in sticking to a well-worn path. ![]() As every horror fan understands, reckless behavior – such as picking up a hitchhiker – is bound to have dire consequences. Hawk pays for his motel room and gives him some fresh clothes, no strings attached. As luck has it, Jamie Anderson is also trying to make his way to Los Angeles, where he hopes to get steady work and become a writer. Not long after leaving Indiana in “Madeline,” a 1963 Jaguar that has been lovingly restored by his father, he decides to pick up a hitchhiker on Route 66. He’s decided to divorce his cheating wife, cash out of the company he co-founded, and embark on a cross-country journey to see his best friend in Los Angeles. Tech executive Johnny Hawk is rebooting his life. Thank you Netgalley and Davide Taristano for my ARC copy in exchange for my honest review If you love a book loaded with gore and will keep you on the edge of your seat, then this is the book for you! I would have liked a bit more on Wendy and her father and how she ended up the way she did as I kind of feel that it was left a bit more abstract than I would have liked but there was gore galore and honestly, it was one hell of a read without it anyway. I loved that the book didn’t need to dig into any of the characters' backgrounds to be a really solid read. Digging into the darkest psyche of a seriously deranged woman, had me flipping pages like a maniac! I was seriously thirsting for something dark and sadistic and this book delivers some seriously horrific twists. Little does he know that the woman he has strong feelings for has a dark and disturbing past… One he starts to discover when he finds himself drugged and strapped to her dentist chair…. Upon arriving in New Mexico Johnny meets the beautiful Wendy Jag who extracts his problem tooth.įireworks and passion fly and Johnny feels some serious contentment. On the way he picks up a hitchhiker, who sees he is in desperate need of a dentist. Johnny Hawk decides to leave his life behind and takes his dad's classic car on a roadtrip to start his life over. I just finished the Tooth Fairy by Davide Taristano It could have been so much better! But don’t take my word for it - this book has many 5 star reviews. It was totally predictable and not very scary at all. The road trip part of the book in the middle was too long and tedious. Other than that the character development was thin. You would have guessed that, right? And it was mercifully short. On the plus side - there were teeth pulled. Johnny Hawk, travelling across the country ended up ensnared in Wendy’s dark web. As she got older a dark side of Wendy started to appear and gradually take control. Wendy followed in her father’s footsteps and became a dentist. Her father, a dentist, went to pieces after that and abused a number of substances and his daughter. Wendy Jag had a rough childhood - her mother killed herself and she saw the body hanging which would be traumatic for anyone. ![]() However, I found the book very disappointing and I know I’m an outlier with that view. I’ve been dabbling a bit more into the horror genre and the sound of this appealed. I’ve had this book for a while and was waiting for a chance to read it which finally came.
